Y'shtana was only five when Garlean Imperial forces destroyed her tribe and dragged her into slavery. Now, years later, she serves as a botanical specialist in an Imperial household, her healing gifts hidden beneath a mask of perfect compliance. To survive, she has learned to balance two worlds—the sterile efficiency demanded by her captors and the ancient connection to the forest that still pulses in her blood.

But the Shroud is awakening.

Mysterious patterns are emerging across the eastern territories, and the Empire grows desperate to understand them. As Imperial researchers close in on the truth about her abilities, Y'shtana discovers she is not alone—other survivors carry the old gifts, other hearts hear the forest's call. The botanical networks that once connected her people are stirring to life, reaching out to their scattered children with a message both beautiful and terrifying: The time of return approaches.

Caught between the safety of captivity and the dangerous promise of freedom, Y'shtana must choose her path. The forest remembers its own, but answering its call means risking everything—her carefully constructed life, the other slaves who depend on her healing, and possibly her life itself.

Some bonds cannot be broken by conquest. Some connections run deeper than chains.
